During the holy month of Ramadan, organisations and/or companies in Qatar host iftars, suhoors, charity initiatives and other Ramadan events to observe and celebrate the occassion.
Here are some organisations who have celebrated Ramadan with events in the first half of the holy month.
InterContinental Doha The City
For the third consecutive year during Ramadan, colleagues at InterContinental Doha The City pitched in to prepare and deliver traditional iftar meals to the families in accommodation at the Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protection.
In celebration of the holy month of Ramadan, Qatar Airways hosted its media partners and supporters for Sohour at The St. Regis Doha last week. Senior Vice-President Corporate Communications, Salam Al Shawa welcomed the guests and expressed the airline’s appreciation for the media’s support of the national carrier’s growth and development over the last year. Held at the most luxurious Ramadan tent in Doha, Qatar Airways’ guests enjoyed a programme that included live entertainment by Laialy El Nagham, resident band of the Cairo Opera House, and a unique and appealing banquet spread.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC)
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), in cooperation with the Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services, has set up two Ramadan tents to serve daily iftar as part of its continuing efforts to support and develop local communities in Qatar and provide opportunities for workers on Al Wakrah and Al Bayt – Al Khor City stadiums and in the surrounding areas to come together. For the duration of the holy month of Ramadan, breakfast meals will be served to more than 1,000 people in two large tents. During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the SC installed four TV screens inside the tents so guests could watch all the matches live.
The management of Qatar Petroleum’s (QP) Offshore Operations recently shared iftar and Ghabga among QP employees and contractors’ staff in Halul Island. Sports activities were also held as part of the event, and Offshore Operations’ management participated in games, such as table tennis, snooker and traditional Arabic board game (Keram).
QP Industrial Cities
Qatar Petroleum’s Industrial Cities Directorate recently organised Ghabga at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Doha recently. The event was held in the presence of HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of QP, and it was attended by a host of representatives from Qatar’s northern communities as well as the senior management of the major companies operating in Mesaieed Industrial City and Ras Laffan Industrial City.
QP Dukhan Operations
HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum (QP), and HE Ahmad bin Amer Al-Hemaidi, Minister of Environment, were the special guests at the Annual Iftar 2014 organised last Monday by QP’s Dukhan Operations. During the event, the guests witnessed a series of traditional activities, including the firing of the iftar cannon.
Qatar Red Crescent
With the beginning of Ramadan, Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) initiated the activities of the annual Ramadan Tent installed near its headquarters, Old Slata. This year’s tent is larger to accommodate more visitors – 2,800 daily, or 84,000 throughout the month, compared to 75,000 in Ramadan 2013. Costing QR1,350,000 and operated by a big team of QRC staff and volunteers, the tent distributes hot iftar meals, dates, water, juices, and milk, supplied by high-quality restaurants that were selected in a public tender, while ensuring variation of meals and selection of the best food for fasting.
The Ritz-Carlton, Doha
The Ritz-Carlton, Doha, in partnership with the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship 2015, pledged to prepare and donate 300 iftar meal boxes daily for people in need. The hotel staff and the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship 2015 will be visiting public labour areas and cater iftar meals for the less fortunate directly to their premises every day of the month of Ramadan.
Qatar Football Association
Qatar Football Association (QFA) organised an iftar gathering for ten Asian communities on 10 July at Al Gassar Resort. The communities include Indonesians, Sri Lankans, Nepalese, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Chinese, Japanese, Jordanians, Lebanese, and South Koreans. QFA has organised a series of iftars for different communities last week to thank them for their ongoing support throughout the year. The iftars were also intended to discuss future cooperation with community leaders, and ways in which QFA can support communities in their future events and activities.
The QFC Authority marked the holy month of Ramadan with an invitation to the local business community, media and other dignitaries to join them in a celebratory networking suhoor at the Four Seasons last Thursday. The QFC Authority used the occasion to thank the QFC firms and wider business community for its support and participation which has resulted in a highly successful year for QFC. In the spirit of Ramadan, the QFC Authority also appealed to the 500 plus guests to generously support Qatar Charity, who work extensively with underprivileged children and other disadvantaged groups, and collection boxes were placed around the hall to enable guests to contribute. The QFC Authority has committed to matching every riyal raised, thus doubling the total amount.
Oryx Rotana Doha
Oryx Rotana Doha held an iftar for the elders at the Qatar Foundation for Elderly People Care (Ihsan) on 7 July 2014. The event was part of the hotel’s initiatives to raise awareness on the importance of sharing and giving back to society during and after Ramadan. Oryx Rotana colleagues spent a memorable time with seniors from the foundation sharing stories about their life experiences in Qatar. Giveaways such as garangao pouches were also given at the center.
Reach Out To Asia
Reach Out To Asia (ROTA’s) volunteers were recently joined by the Qatar Municipality team at the ROTA Municipality Workers Iftar at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University Student Center. Together both teams actively participated in the event as the workers enjoyed a spread of delicacies for the iftar, received gifts, and enjoyed an exciting evening of entertainment. ROTA’s volunteers also hosted a special iftar at the Residential Care Compound- a care facility for patients with psychiatric conditions. The iftar was attended by a number of residents with the aim of promoting solidarity and brotherhood during the Holy Month reiterating the importance of giving back to the community.
More than 20 volunteers from ROTA gathered to celebrate Ifthar with residents at the Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care, which provides care and treatment for elderly residents in Qatar. ROTA Board Member Dr Sheikha Aisha bint Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani celebrated with volunteers and Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care staff, spending considerable time visiting with elderly residents during and after the event. ROTA volunteers offered personal assistance and dined with residents, helping serve an exquisite meal to them. Volunteers from Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) Qatar, the exclusive sponsor of ROTA’s Ramadan project and QMDI joined the celebration.
Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA)
On17 July 2014, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) organised a Ramadan Ghabga banquet for its employees and stakeholders – hoteliers in Qatar. The event which was attended by HE Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, Chairman of QTA and QTA’s executive management was held at the Ramadan tent at La Cigale hotel. The event, now a regular feature of QTA’s calendar, aims to celebrate Ramadan traditions and strengthen relations and understanding of the true spirit of the Holy Month.
To encourage the hospitality industry to boost their Ramadan activities this year and enhance the quality of their services, QTA has also launched a programme to award the hotels which provide the best quality experiences to their visitors. QTA will continue its assessment of the throughout the month, with the awards being announced immediately after Eid.
Earlier this month, QTA launched a yearly event programme ‘Ramadan in Qatar’- QTA’s newly created brand aimed at generating a unified and consistent ambience for the holy month of Ramadan. The brand is used as a means to showcase the Qatari Islamic and Arabic culture and traditions which are highlighted in significance during this month, giving visitors to Qatar a true authentic experience.
A delegation from Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) paid a visit to Dhreima (Qatar Orphan Foundation), voicing appreciation for its humanitarian efforts in supporting orphans in Qatar and satisfying the needs of disadvantaged children.
The delegation led by Qatar Rail’s Deputy CEO Hamad al Bishri, and Executive Director of Administration Eng. Meshal Abdulla al-Obaidan, were in turn received by the foundation’s director, Khaled Kamal, who accompanied the delegation on an inspection tour across the different departments of the foundation, introducing them to the social services and activities organized by Dhreima throughout the year.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts
The fifth annual ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative brought more than 40 Starwood hotels from across the region, including W Doha Hotel & Residences and The St. Regis Doha, together for a worthy cause. During the hour of iftar, packs of food and beverages were distributed to cab drivers at the main entrance of each hotel.
Catering teams at each hotel prepared iftar packs which included a diverse selection of food and beverage items. Associates from across various departments within the hotels, including Catering, Administration and Guest Services joined forces to bring the ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative to life.
The ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative – ideated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts – has been running since 2010 and has since become an annual tradition for many cab drivers throughout the region. The initiative has been widely appreciated by its hotel owners, the community and local transport authorities.
