Oxy Qatar Funds 500 Students as Part of the INJAZ ‘More Than Money’ Programme
INJAZ Qatar, a non-profit organisation and member of Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide, has formed an investment partnership with Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd (Oxy Qatar), an international oil and gas exploration and production company to sponsor the ‘More than Money’ programme.
‘More Than Money’ is a financial literacy programme targeting 500 students aged 11-15 years old at various independent primary and middle schools in Qatar during the 2013-2014 academic year.
The President and General Manager of Oxy Qatar, Stephen Kelly, said:
Oxy Qatar is proud to sponsor the INJAZ ‘More Than Money’ programme. We are committed to promoting economic growth and self-sufficiency in the regions and communities where we operate. Our support of INJAZ Qatar, which promotes education and business knowledge to students for the benefit of their future careers, exemplifies this commitment, and we are thrilled to be involved. We commend everyone at INJAZ Qatar for their initiative and dedication.’
With an estimated twenty 6-week classes, the programme is designed to equip young people with entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy skills. The programme teaches students about earning, spending, sharing and saving money. It also teaches students about businesses they can start or jobs they can perform to earn money. These skills are key to the INJAZ Qatar mission which aims to prepare youth to become successful business leaders and entrepreneurs in a global economy.
The programme is packaged in a portfolio containing detailed session plans, informative Take-Home Flyers for students and families, and additional learning materials to ensure a successful experience for students, volunteers, after-school staff, and teachers.
We are extremely grateful to Oxy for their support this year. As a result of this generous funding we will be able to reach out to a new generation of students and help them develop their financial literacy skills.’
The ‘More than Money’ programme encompasses economics and business curriculum for students in middle grade students. The programme emphasises social studies content while providing a strong focus on mathematics, reading, and writing skills. Students are encouraged to use innovative thinking to learn money-management skills that support positive attitudes as they explore and enhance their career aspirations.
INAZ Qatar facilitates links between private businesses and educational institutions, allowing employees from different partner companies to teach the INJAZ Qatar curricula at various middle and secondary schools and universities in Qatar.
