In recognition of Qatar Petroleum’s (QP) seventh Environmental Fair, Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd. (Oxy Qatar) has launched Sea and Shore Life of Qatar, the third title in the Qatar Nature Explorer book series.

Qatar Nature Explorer was published in collaboration with Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing and the author, Frances Gillespie. The full book set includes six illustrated books for young children on the natural history and flora and fauna of Qatar, and is available in both English and Arabic. Sea and Shore Life of Qatar was presented during the opening ceremony of the QP Environment Fair on 23 April 2014 to HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry.

Author Frances Gillespie, a British national resident in Qatar since 1985, said:

During the past few years I’ve published several books aimed at adults, but I’ve now turned to writing for children as I think it’s so important that the young people of this country learn to understand, respect and take an interest in our natural and cultural heritage. Without the encouragement and sponsorship of companies like Oxy these publications would not be possible. I know that Oxy is dedicated to helping the community in a number of ways and I’m very grateful for their support.’

Oxy is the second-largest oil producer offshore Qatar, where we operate Idd El Shargi North Dome (ISND), located approximately 50 miles east of the Qatar peninsula; Idd El Shargi South Dome (ISSD), about 15 miles south of ISND; and Al Rayyan (Block 12), located northeast of the Qatar peninsula. For nearly two decades, Oxy has worked in close cooperation with Qatar Petroleum to develop and operate offshore oilfields.

Since 2012, Oxy Qatar has launched a new book each year based on the theme of QP’s Environmental Fair. Plants of Qatar and Mammals of Qatar, the first two titles in the book series, were printed and distributed at the 2012 and 2013 fairs.  Sea and Shore Life of Qatar fits perfectly with the 2014 fair’s theme of water use and conservation. The book provides information on the marine flora and fauna native to Qatar. President and General Manager of Oxy Qatar, Stephen Kelly, said:

We are very pleased once again to provide these fascinating and informative books to students and visitors during the Qatar Petroleum Environmental Fair. In addition, Oxy Qatar recently donated the complete Qatar Nature Explorer set to the Supreme Education Council to distribute to school libraries across Qatar. We hope the books will provide value to all students and enhance awareness of Qatar’s rich and diverse natural heritage.’

As in previous years, free copies of the book will be distributed at Oxy’s stand in the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) until Saturday 26 April 2014 at 8 pm.
