After being honoured in the Unsung Hero category at the recent Hotelier Middle East Awards, Hezron Jeremiah Onyango, the laundry attendant at the InterContinental Doha The City, was personally presented a certificate of recognition from Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Crescente R. Relacion.

The presentation of the certificate of recognition was held on 17 December 17 during an all-colleague meeting at InterContinental Doha The City.

Last year, when Typhoon Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, many of Hezron’s colleagues and their families were personally affected by catastrophe. In addition to donating to the IHG® Shelter in a Storm disaster relief programme, colleagues at InterContinental Doha The City band together to raise funds for their fellow teammates who were impacted by the storm. In an extraordinary act of kindness, Hezron quietly donated an entire month’s salary to the cause.

Soon after, Hezron was honoured a runner-up award in the Unsung Hero category at the recent Hotelier Middle East Awards and being featured in several local English news dailies in Doha.

According to Hezron, it was his meager upbringing in Nairobi City, Kenya that inspires him to help others as he can empathise with those in need. A passionate football player, Hezron got his first taste of hospitality in 2011 when he joined Diani Reef Hotel in Mombasa before moving to Qatar in 2012 to join InterContinental Doha The City.
