The event which was held at Marina Mandarin Hotel in Singapore honoured the very best in the industry at a spectacular gala dinner and awards ceremony. The event was attended by more than 200 members of the air cargo fraternity with the guest of honour being the Director-General of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Yap Ong Heng. Commenting on the award, Qatar Airways’ Chief Officer Cargo, Ulrich Ogiermann said:
‘Qatar Airways Cargo has established value-added services for its customers and has become a leader of innovation in various aspects of the air cargo industry. The year 2014 has been a remarkable one for Qatar Airways Cargo with the launch of QR Pharma and QR Fresh in January, the migration to the fully automated, state-of-the-art cargo facility at Hamad International Airport, and the launch of eight freighter destinations so far. Two Boeing 777 freighters joined the fleet this year and a fourth Airbus A330 freighter will also be joining the fleet this month, and all of this is reflected in the award.’
The Rising Star Carrier of the Year award is an acknowledgement of Qatar Airways Cargo’s dynamic growth in recent years, and its customer service and product innovations.
The Payload Asia awards cover some 22 categories of the air cargo sector, as well as three special category Editor’s Choice awards, which together are clearly setting a new benchmark among the existing air cargo industry awards.
Payload Asia, the respected industry publication for the air cargo sector, now in its 30th year of publication, has raised the bar even further this year by adding a second parallel set of awards, meaning for each category there are now two awards: the Customer Choice Awards and the Industry Choice Awards. This is a way of highlighting two equally important, but slightly different shades of excellence – one based on popular vote and the other on an industry panel assessment.
Qatar Airways Cargo serves more than 40 exclusive freighter destinations worldwide via its Doha hub and also delivers freight to 145 key business and leisure destinations globally on 139 aircraft. The Qatar Airways Cargo fleet currently includes three Airbus A330F and seven Boeing 777 Freighters. At the Dubai Airshow 2013, Qatar Airways placed a firm order for five new Airbus A330-200 Freighter aircraft. Also included in the order were eight additional A330-200F options, for a total of 13 aircraft. At the recent Farnborough Show, Qatar Airways announced its intent to order four 777 Freighters and options for four more. IATA’s Airline Industry Forecast 2014-2018 report mentions that Qatar will be a notable growth country with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.7%, making it the sixth-fastest growing to take its total freight tonnes to 1,484,000 per annum.
