Qatar Airways Group demonstrated its commitment to the fire safety of its staff and their families by again hosting its annual Fire Safety Week. The event is a significant week in the airline’s safety calendar as it focused on conducting awareness-raising displays and activities at various company venues, aimed at reducing the risk of fires at residential homes.

The official opening of Fire Safety Week 2018 was held at Oryx International School recently, where live and static fire-safety displays and activities were presented to children by the Qatar Airways Group Safety Team and Fire Safety trainers.

Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Human Resources Nabeela Fakhri, said that the airline is justifiably proud of the initiative.

We value the safety of our staff and their families above all. For this reason, we want to ensure that fire safety messages reach as many homes and families as possible. It is wonderful to see so many staff and family members from all age groups actively participating.’

Fire Safety Poster Competition

Poster Competition WinnerA key activity of every Fire Safety week is the annual Fire Safety Poster Competition. The annual awards for the competition winners has become the launch event and the much-anticipated highlight of the week. Every year, the poster competition attracts hundreds of entries, all are vying for the prizes and recognition that goes to the winner of each age group and the overall winner. This year also featured a special poster competition held for Oryx School students.

Entry is open to all company staff and family members, with entries judged and prizes awarded across several age groups from infant to adult. Posters are judged according to the relevance of their fire safety message and the presentation of the artwork. All entries must be original and hand-created.

Oryx International School Principal Jarlath Madine said they were delighted to host the event.

All our children need to learn the lessons of fire safety while they are young. We are very pleased to be part of this initiative and to support Qatar Airways in their drive to keep our families safe. We will remain an active participant (in this initiative) after we move to our new, purpose-built campus in Barwa due to open later this year.’

‘Safety is our highest priority’

As one of Qatar’s leading employers, Qatar Airways Group provides more than 10,000 accommodation units for staff members and their families in Doha. The airline considers the safety of staff in their accommodation to be as important as safety in the workplace.

While Fire Safety Week is an initiative of Qatar Airways Group Safety and Security Division, all departments are encouraged to be actively involved in making Fire Safety Week an engaging and rewarding part of the airline’s community and workplace safety activities.

In support of this, Qatar Airways Talent Development department’s Fire Safety trainers, all of whom are former professional firefighters, conducted a very impressive live-fire demonstration and imparted safety tips to the audience.

The airline’s Facilities Management department provided equipment for the demonstration; Qatar Duty Free (QDF) generously donated a variety of valuable prizes for the worthy winners; and all Oryx School students were provided with a special meal pack prepared by Qatar Aircraft Catering Company.

Qatar Airways Safety Policy states that ‘Safety is our highest priority’; a principle the airline advocates both in the workplace and in the community.
