Qatar Chamber First Vice-Chairman HE Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Twar Al Kuwari recently opened the first-ever aquaponic internal farm for Agrico Agricultural Development at Carrefour hypermarket in City Center Doha.

The opening ceremony was attended by Agrico Chairman Ahmed Al-Khalaf and Managing Director Nasser Ahmed Al-Khalaf, as well as a number of businessmen. Agrico developed the project using aquaponic technologies, which is considered one of the smartest and most sustainable agricultural systems.

Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that combines raising fish in tanks with soilless plant culture. In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from raising fish provides a natural fertiliser for the plants while the plants help purify the water for the fish. The project’s expected production capacity is at least 32,000 tonnes of various types of vegetables annually.

First Indoor Aquaponic Farm 2The project was initially launched on an area of 4,000 square metre for the horizontal indoor farming system.

Bin Twar praised the modern technologies used in the project, which he said provides new possibilities for investing in the agricultural sector and from the challenges of soil and water availability, in support of the state’s efforts to enhance food security.
