The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani inaugurated the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project at a ceremony at the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KHARAMAA) in Umm Salal Ali on 11 December.

Kahramaa has the largest reservoirs of its kind in the world. According to Kahramaa, the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project includes 15 reservoirs in five sites at a total capacity of 1500 MIG, equivalent to nine football fields and 180 Olympic swimming pools. The weight of steel used in pipes are equivalent to 70 Eiffel Towers and the concert used is enough to build six of the world’s tallest buildings.

According to the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project in Qatar is the largest in the world, a huge strategic reservoir that raises the country’s water storage by about 150% and is worth QAR14.5 billion. The reservoir is set to enter the Guinness World Records for world’s largest drinking water storage tank.

The President of Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Saad bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi, said the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project enables Qatar to meet challenges of freshwater shortages and demonstrates that the wise leadership takes into account the national security of the country by providing the largest water reservoir in the world.

The first phase of the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project was inaugurated in June 2018 by the Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. The foundation stone of the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project was laid in May 2015.
