The a public holiday, falls on the second Tuesday of every February. Qatar National Sport Day was inaugurated in 2012 by HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to promote the importance of sport and physical activity in leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Different events take place across Doha in the celebration of Qatar National Sport Day (NSD).
Marhaba have provided you with a guide to ‘Qatar National Sport Day 2015′ and now we are giving you a look at what you happened if you were not out and about:
Katara Cultural Village
Katara has attracted significant turnout of visitors at the early hours of the day, within an overwhelming atmosphere of health, joy and entertainment. For the fourth consecutive year, Katara has been a favourite destination for different entities and institution during the National Sport Day, due to its dazzling aesthetic nature, and spacious facilities, which are open to all segments of the public at different occasions, throughout the year.
This year’s grand sport occasion, kicked off on Katara’s southern esplanade, with the presence of; HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, Minister of Economy and Commerce, and His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh bin Abdulla Al Sada, minister of energy and industry. The Director General of Cultural Village Foundation, His Excellency, Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti, along with representatives of different government and private entities and sport federations, were also present during the event.
Katara hosted over 100 activities, with the participation 49 entities, which explains the significant turnout of visitors, and their keenness to take part in the event.
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) marked NSD with a number of healthy and sports-related activities organised for its staff and their families at the Nurses Club, Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City (HBKMC).
Wearing t-shirts and hats with health awareness messages, staff and their families kicked off the day by taking part in a walkathon around HBKMC. This was followed by basketball, lawn tennis, mini football and mini golf games for adults. Children celebrated the day playing on bouncy castles and enjoying a variety of board games.
HMC’s NSD events included a number of opportunities for staff and their families to take part in health screenings including blood pressure, diabetes and body mass index (BMI) checks as well as height and weight screenings.
Additional activities included first aid demonstrations which offered staff practical tips on performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation through live demonstrations on dummies. Nutritional information was also available with members of HMC’s Nutrition Department present to provide healthy eating advice. Many staff members, including children, also took time to write or draw a health message on a wall mural designed to commemorate the day. Face painting and drawing activities were other highlights
HMC’s Blood Donation Center also played a major part in activities marking the day, by organising mobile donation campaigns at Aspire Zone and near the Sheraton Hotel Doha on the Corniche. Members of the public were encouraged to donate blood through the mobile donation units stationed at both venues from 8 am to 8 pm. The staff was present to educate donors about the importance of donating blood, to offer them general health advice and perform routine checks to ensure they were eligible to donate.
HH, The Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), joined thousands of spectators from around the country to celebrate NSD at Qatar Foundation.
Their Highnesses watched participants enjoy a range of physical activities designed to inspire healthy living and enjoyment of sport, and thereby support delivery of the Qatar National Vision 2030. They also witnessed a table tennis tournament for people with special needs, a basketball for children and adults as well as a range of traditional Qatari games such as sack races, rope pulling and Dahrouri.
The highlight of this year’s activities was the walkathon through Education City. Under the theme of ‘Unlock Your Inner Athlete’, each stage of the route included educational activities to inspire people to lead healthier, more active lifestyles. The walkathon was inaugurated by the President of Qatar Foundation, Engineer Saad Al Muhannadi. Discussing the inspiration behind QF’s activities. The walkathon featured 47 activities along its 3.8 kilometre route which enabled visitors to learn more about Education City and the role that QF plays in promoting education, science and research, and community development.
The walkathon started at 10 am at AL SHAQAB, which is a member of Qatar Foundation. The equestrian centre is steeped in Qatari tradition and hosted a series of activities that gave residents the chance to learn more about its world-class horses and activities. The next stop on the walkathon was Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) where the participants attended an informative workshop on nutrition called ‘Healthy Life’. Led by Dr Shahrad Taheri, Professor of Medicine at WCMC-Q, the seminar educated visitors about the importance of a nutritious diet.
As the walkathon progressed through Education City, Ameena Ahmadi, Technical Director at QF’s Capital Projects, discussed the key architectural properties that define the buildings of Qatar Foundation and their locations. Among the structures featured were Qatar National Library, the new Qatar Foundation Headquarters, the Ceremonial Court and student accommodation.
Additional stages along the route included the Hamad Bin Khalifa University Student Centre where people participated in a rowing exercise and the Green Spine where a number of sports tournaments took place including football and basketball games. Participants were also given the chance to watch a series of taekwondo and gymnastics demonstrations.
The walkathon came to a close at Awsaj Academy, which played host to a series of ladies only activities including aerobics, pilates and circuit training. Awsaj Academy Recreation Center also hosted running competitions for young and old.
In addition, the Qatar Foundation cricket ground hosted a collection of activities throughout the day, including the annual Friendship Cup cricket tournament between Qatar Foundation and RasGas which seeks to strength social ties between the workers taking part. The stadium also witnessed tug of war competitions and cricket games for children too.
QTA Walkathon at The Pearl-Qatar
Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) organised a ‘walkathon’ in The Pearl-Qatar Island, in cooperation with the United Development Company (UDC). QTA Chairman HE Issa Bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, a number of QTA officials, representatives from the tourism sector, media and general public took part in the event.
The activity was a real opportunity for participants to test their fitness and physical abilities through a pleasant sport tour within The Pearl-Qatar, which is a synonym for the Arab Riviera in the heart of Doha.
Ministry of Interior
The Ministry of Interior (MoI) hosted a variety of sports activities in line with the NSD celebrations at Qatar Sports Stadium and other ten places.
The Director General of Public Security Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim Al Khulaifi, Advisor of HE Minister of Interior Major General Dr Abdullah Yusuf al Mal, chairman of Qatar Sports club Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, Chairman of Arab Police Sports Federation and Qatar Police Sports Federation Brigadier, Khalid bin Hamad Al Atiyyah, Military Retirement Committee chairman Staff Brigadier Hamad Jassim Al Moraiziq and a number of depart directors and officials participated in the sports events held in Qatar Sports club. Qatar Society for Rehabilitation of Special Needs, Qatar Cancer Society, Yasmine for Mini Golf also took part in the events.
The events at Qatar Sports Stadium included with competitions in tug of war, arm-wrestling, running race for 100,400 and 1,600 meters, football and other fitness exercises and entertainment games for kids. In addition, MoI conducted activities in Police College in association with Dhreima
At Al Khor, the Community Policing Department held a host of activities in Al Khor Sports Slub in association with QPSF, Al Khor Sports club. The activities included competitions in tug of war, volleyball, futsal, running race, basketball, billiards etc.
The activities in Abu Samra Border department were attended by Brigadier Nasser bin Abdullah Al Thani, chairman of Permanent committee of Abu Samra Border and Adil Alawi Al Yafie, secretary of the committee along with heads and officials of different sections. The Search and Follow Department also held different activities at 8 am. A number of lady officers from MoI took part in the sports activities held in Al Hidaya Secondary School for Girls. The Penal and Correctional Institutions held different activities whereas the trainers of Qatar Sports Federation and Qatar Police Sports Federation attended in the events. Competitions were conducted for the inmates and prizes were distributed for winners.
Qatar Petroleum (QP)
Qatar Petroleum (QP) celebrated NSD 2015 with a wide range of fun-filled activities for over 4,000 QP employees and their families at Aspire Zone Park.
Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, President & CEO of Qatar Petroleum, led QP’s activities as senior executives, managers, and staff members took part in the various events planned for the day. Al Kaabi joined staff for the main highlight of the day, in which over 300 staffmembers formed a human QP logo to signify unity in pursuing the corporation’s strategic objectives, and to reflect collective commitment to work together for QP’s continued growth and development. Al Kaabi then toured the Aspire Zone, and HE Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, also visited the venue of QP activities, where he was welcomed by Al Kaabi.
QP’s NSD activities, which were organised from 8 am to 4 pm, included aerobics and Zumba, freestyle football, basketball hoops, zorb football, an inflatable obstacle course, wall climbing, and a boot camp combat course.
A designated play area was also set aside for children below five years old, and there were also specific areas for conducting exercise drills and NSD games. A photo booth was also set up for those wanting to take pictures of their participation in the event.
During the event, the selected participants for QP’s weight loss challenge, entitled ‘Be Healthy, Be a Winner’, were also formally announced, with the winner to be awarded in next year’s NSD. In addition, in line with the objectives of the event, QP’s Medical Services Department was also on hand to promote its health awareness programs and to offer free blood sugar testing, blood pressure monitoring, and body mass index (BMI) measurement.
The activities in Aspire Park were part of other events organised by QP throughout Qatar to mark NSD. Similar events were held in Dukhan, where QP staff took part in football, volleyball, golf, badminton, rugby, and tennis competitions, in addition of various water sports activities and a 5-kilometer walking marathon.
Similar activities were held in Halul Island, where management and staff members took part in several basketball, tennis, table tennis, and swimming competitions in addition to the Halul Run and a tug-of-war.
Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell
Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell celebrated this year’s NSD with a KOORA TIME ‘Winner Stays On’ football tournament. The event held at Aspire Zone was officially kicked off by HE Dr Mohammed Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry Affairs.
The ‘Winner Stays On’ football tournament ran for eight consecutive hours and was open to men, women, and children of all ages and athletic abilities. The competition brought together over 4500 participants from around the country and all for the same purpose, a shared love of football.
KOORA TIME’s NSD activities also featured a comprehensive fan zone area, offering numerous fun and non-football related activities, including Human Foosball, Volleyball, and Aerobics.
The football tournament was part of KOORA TIME, a five-year sustainable initiative designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Qatar’s youth through football. The community-inspired initiative supports the Social and Human Development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy (NDS) by engaging Qatar’s youth at every stage of their lives.
Qatar Red Crescent (QRC)
On NSD, Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) conducted several sports, recreational, and informative activities for the visitors of the Katara Cultural Village, and QRC teams took part in the different sports events organised by 46 institutions.
As of 7:30 am, all events went on in sunny and funny settings, which encouraged all visitors to engage in sports matches and activities designed for all family members, with active participation from more than 200 QRC officials, staffers, and volunteers.
Competently run by the volunteers, QRC’s events tent saw many activities, including information of the visitors about QRC’s mission and the importance of voluntary and charitable work; distribution of educational publications, water and juice bottles, and gifts; conduct of recreational activities for children such as drawing, painting, and baby-foot; and conduct of cultural competitions for both children and adults.
Supervised by two senior QRC medical officers, a health tent was set up to distribute health awareness publications; give health advising as well as first aid and CPR training; and perform blood sugar, pressure, and oxygen level tests for free.
Several QRC ambulance vehicles and paramedics were dispatched to medically cover Katara and the Diplomatic Club throughout the day. Many cases were received, including fatigue and injuries. Serious cases were moved by ambulance vehicles to the hospital for specialised care.
QRC branch in Al-Khor organised diverse sports, recreational, and educational activities on NSD. Participating in the celebrations of NSD for the fourth consecutive year, the branch also conducted some medical, social, and environmental tasks, with significant help from the volunteers, in cooperation with Qatar Security Services Co., Qatar Guest Center (QGC), and Qatar Gas.
The main part of the celebrations was a 5000-step walkathon of 150 QRC staffers and volunteers of varying ages. After gathering in front of the branch’s premises at 7:30 am, the participants marched towards the corniche with Qatar and QRC flags, accompanied by a medical team to ensure their safety. Everyone walked 4 km, burned 240 calories, and lost 9.8 g fat. Some Al-Khor biker groups joined the walkathon to celebrate the National Sports Day together.
In commitment to culture of healthy lifestyles in Qatari community, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) took part in the sports activities organised by the Ministry of Transport, on the occasion on Qatar’s Fourth National Sports Day, in a family day full of fun and entertainment.
Qatar Rail’s participation in the event came from its commitment to sports initiatives that are in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, and which includes all aspects of development in Qatar in order to achieve environmental sustainability and social and cultural development and to promote humanitarian efforts.
The sports event took place at Matar El Khor and joined prominent companies such as Mowasalat, Qatar Ports Management Company, Civil Aviation Authority and Qatar Aeronautical College.
Qatar Airways Group
The participants from Qatar Airways, Hamad International Airport, Qatar Duty Free, Qatar Airways Cargo, Qatar Aircraft Catering Company, Qatar Aviation Services, and Qatar Amiri Flight all attended and enthusiastically took part in the fourth annual Qatar National Sports Day.
The day started early in the morning at Al Sadd Sports Club, with a variety of activities including football, volleyball, basketball and cricket. Children enjoyed dedicated football training sessions with the football trainers, as well as a kids activity area where they had the chance to play with their peers in bouncy castles.
Spectators also enjoyed watching those participating in the many events and cheering for their favourite teams. The competitive streak was seen in many as they attempted to win first place in their chosen sports. Cricket was again the most popular activity attracting plenty of players and spectators.
T-shirts and caps were given to all participants upon arrival, and lunch and refreshments were distributed during the day. The day ended with an award ceremony, with winners being presented trophies and medals for first and second place.
Msheireb Properties, the developer of the world’s first sustainable urban regeneration project, demonstrated its support for Qatar NSD by hosting a programme of sports and activities for all its employees, family members and construction workers working for Msheireb.
Over 500 employees and construction worker took part in a variety of sporting event including football, basketball, volleyball and kabaddi. These events were hosted at two separate locations, Aspire Park and at Msheireb Downtown Doha.
