Qatar Olympic Committee Forms Interim Committee to Oversee Rugby and American Football Activities in Qatar
The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has announced the formation of an Interim Committee to oversee Rugby and American Football activities on Sunday 12 April 2015, reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to nurturing and developing all sports.
The Board of Directors of the Committee will be chaired by Yousef Al Kuwairi while Ali Al Malki will act as Secretary General. The remaining members of the Committee are Sulaiman Al Bannai, Khalifa Al Kubaisi and Mohamed Al Mutawa. Commenting on the formation of the Committee, Al Kuwairi said:
It is an honor to be a part of the QOC’s effort to support and nourish all sports and we hope that by forming this Committee, the great sports of rugby and American football can find new athletes and new fans here in Doha, which is already home to so many different sporting activities.’
Qatar’s National Rugby Team has made notable strides on the GCC and regional scene, most recently winning for the first time ever the Arabian Gulf Top 6 League Championships, defeating Abu Dhabi in the high-stakes final by 49-22. On the regional level, the Qatari National Rugby Team won second place in the 2014 Asian 5 Nations Tournament, organised by the Asian Rugby Football Union, after a narrow defeat to Malaysia in the final.
The Committee will work to bolster the rugby and American football sporting activities in Qatar by overseeing said activities, as well as preparing rules and regulations that will govern the relevant tournaments. The Interim Committee will also be responsible for the marketing and promotion of these sporting activities so as to inform the general public of any upcoming rugby and American football related-events.
