National Sport Day was established in 2012 with the aim of uniting the nation in a shared celebration of sport and inspiring people to lead active and healthy lifestyles. Qatar is one of the only countries in the world to dedicate a public holiday to sport and the number of people that turned up to join in activities this year shows how it continues to be a huge success. No rain stopped the Qatar residents from celebrating the Qatar National Sport Day (QNSD) yesterday all across the country. People from kids to adults participated in various activities organised by government and private institutions. 

Qatar Airways Sport Day Activities Sees Launch of Staff Wellness Centre 

The National Carrier participated in the National Day activities of Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) event in The Pearl–Qatar.

Qatar Airways celebrated National Sport Day with activities dedicated to promoting a healthier lifestyle. Held as part of Qatar Airways’ Staff Wellness Programme, the airline’s Sports Day, which saw the launch of the official opening of the new Wellness Centre, took place at Al Sadd Sports Club and included team activities for all.

The airline recently partnered with Aspire Zone Foundation to become a participating workplace in the ‘Step into Health’ programme, a nation-wide initiative under the management of Aspetar’s Exercise is Medicine Department. The initiative promotes the concept of holistic health change by engaging the people of Qatar in a self-managed programme of lifelong daily activity.

Qatar University Celebrates Qatar National Sport Day

Qatar University (QU) staff, faculty, students and their families joined people all over Qatar yesterday in celebrating National Sports Day, in line with the Emiri decision for the day to be observed on the second Tuesday in February each year.

Through the Sports Activities Department, QU conducted a series of sporting and fitness events on its campus and at Katara Cultural Village (Katara) as part of its contribution towards the national effort to promote sports and healthy lifestyles throughout the community.

Themed “Sports Unite Us”, the activities were organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Community College of Qatar (CCQ), and Katara, the official host.

Qatar Olympic and Paralympic Heroes Inspired Aspiring Athletes on QNSD

Team Qatar’s Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic athletes have joined in National Sport Day celebrations across Qatar as the nation came together for a sixth consecutive year to participate in and enjoy sport. Qatar’s sporting heroes turned out to share their experiences and advice as national federations organised activities across Qatar for all ages and abilities.

Speaking from another hugely successful National Sport Day, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, said:

National Sport Day provides a unique opportunity to unite our nation through sport and share the Olympic spirit, and it is pleasing to see such large numbers of people turning out with their families and friends to participate in the many activities across Qatar. This is about more than just one day of sport – it is about kick-starting a future of health, happiness and success and we hope today’s festivities have inspired people of all ages and abilities to participate in regular activity at any level.’

HE Sheikh Joaan and QOC Secretary General, Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari toured and joined in National Sport Day activities taking place around Qatar. Also participating were leaders of international sport, including CEO of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Olivier Gers, and President of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), Laurent Petrynka.

Qatar Foundation QNSD Celebration Initiated by Sheikha Moza and Sheikha Hind

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani joined visitors at Al Shaqab’s Indoor Arena, where they toured the events and spoke with some of the participants.

The fun-filled program of activities, which included a walkathon and a 40km cycling event that started in Education City, highlights QF’s commitment to creating an active, sports-loving society, while encouraging the wider community to make long-lasting health and lifestyle changes.

Visitors to the Al Shaqab arena also enjoyed a range of high-energy pursuits, including volleyball, football, pony riding, tug-of-war, cycling exercises, and an array of stimulating puzzles and games for kids. QF’s Nutrition Clinic was also on hand to provide nutritional advice to visitors, alongside a number of health food vendors.

QNSD Celebrations at Katara

In an open-air atmosphere at the Cultural Village, the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara organised a various sports-related activities in honour of the sixth National Sports Day. Together with different sectors in Qatar: ministries, municipalities, educational institutes, medical centres and a number of associations and federations including the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), the Community College of Qatar (CCQ), and Qatar University (QU) – with the support of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Katara witnessed a fun-filled rainy occasion. Under the theme ‘Show the Game Skills’, visitors were in spirits celebrating the interactive fun day from 9 am to 6 pm at Katara’s Esplanade.

Minister of Culture and Sports Takes Part in Aspire Zone Foundation’s National Sport Day Activities

Large crowds enjoyed a refreshing experience due to the cooler weather during National Sport Day celebrations in Aspire Zone this year. A number of prominent officials and dignitaries attended on the day to show their support for the development of sports and sporting activity in the country. These included the Minister of Culture and Sports, HE Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, popular former Qatari athlete Captain Talal Mansour, and several of Qatar’s most promising young Olympians.

Community members enjoyed exercise in Qatar’s cool weather

The morning activities kicked off with the annual ‘Fun Run’ event, where large numbers of people of all ages, including some of Qatar’s national Olympic athletes such as Abderrahman Samba, Mabrook Saleh, and Idris Mousa, took part. Visitors to Aspire were as diverse as they have ever been, with all sections of the community represented.

Qatari nationals participated in a range of activities alongside the country’s expat residents. Activities organised by AZF demonstrate how sport can bring people together across all backgrounds, nationalities and ages and build bridges of understanding between cultures.

Around Aspire Park, health and wellness experts offered advice and recommendations on leading a healthy lifestyle at education stations staffed by experts from the Namat physical activity and health education programme.

Elsewhere in Aspire Dome, activities included Beat the Champion, Multi-sport skill development and Football Performance & Science. People of all ages and backgrounds took part in the events together, clearly enjoying the occasion. Large numbers of professionally trained coaches from Aspire Academy were on hand to offer encouragement to all those taking part and cheer them on.

The reaction across Aspire Zone was enormously positive. Many of the people attending the day’s celebrations highlighted their determination to keep fit and active throughout the year, and to take advantage of the world-class facilities and infrastructure available at Aspire Zone. There was widespread appreciation for the lengths that Aspire Zone Foundation goes to in order to encourage active, healthy lifestyles.

Al Meera Joins Qatar National Sport Day in Katara

Al Meera’s role in the 2017 National Sport Day activities revolved around offering sports enthusiasts and participants of the event fresh fruits and water at different locations throughout Katara.

Alongside Al Meera, Katara Cultural Village offered its visitors an exhilarating open-air atmosphere for the National Sports Day, along with a diverse selection of events and sport activities on the beach front, which stemmed from the collaboration with more than 60 private and governmental entities.
