The State of Qatar, represented by the Qatari Society of Al Gannas, participated in the Sixth Ethnosport Forum: Reviving Traditional Sports, which was organised by World Ethnosport in the Turkish city of Antalya, with a delegation headed by Ali bin Khatam Al Mahshadi, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The forum was titled: ‘Folk Sports in the National Educational Curricula: Initiatives and Methods for Bringing Traditional Sports and Games to Schools,’ headed by HE Bilal Erdogan, President of the World Ethnosport, with the participation of more than 50 countries.

Al Mahshadi explained that the association’s participation was distinguished and effective, as the association was crowned as the Best Traditional Sports Organisation in the world, and received the commemorative coronation shield from the President of World Ethnosport. This confirms World Ethnosport’s appreciation for the great effort made by Qatar, represented by Al Gannas, in the field of traditional sports, of which falconry, saluki racing, and shooting are among the most prominent, and the association’s efforts in adopting falconry as a legacy of humanity in UNESCO.

According to Al Mahshadi, Qatari Society of Al Gannas is proud of this achievement and for representing Qatar, which indicates the extent of the effort that Qatar is making in this field, as everyone praises the advanced level that the association performs in its tournaments and festivals, and the precise and advanced laws that it follows in the competitions that it organises. This achievement is the result of the joint work and effort undertaken by everyone, in addition to the scientific projects run by Al Gannas, such as the Qatar Falconry Campaign to release falcons and the Qatar Falcon Genome Project, and the local and international partnerships held by the Society, with international federations, universities, and others.

At the conclusion of the Sixth Ethnosport Forum, HE Bilal Erdogan held a press conference in which he explained that the current forum witnessed the signing of a document of intent to adopt the World Ethnosport as a reference in determining the series of common rules during international traditional sports events, stressing the Federation was keen to continue diversifying popular traditional sports.

It should be noted that the World Ethnosport seeks to revive traditional sports and games, and enhance their social, cultural and sporting role throughout the world.

The President of Al Gannas was elected to the Board of Directors of the World Ethnosport during the fifth meeting of the members of the Federation, which was held in June 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.
