About 165 Holstein dairy cows, the first batch of an estimated 4,000 ‘ready to milk’ cows due to be imported, has arrived in Qatar from Germany.
The shipment was airlifted from Germany via Budapest by a Qatar Airways cargo plane and was received by Qatar based dairy company Baladna at the Hamad International Airport (HIA).
A spokesman for Power International Holding, which is importing the animals, said that the cows are ready to produce milk and the product should reach the local markets this week. Other shipments will include cows from Australia and the United States of America, and should arrive every three days, he added.
This is a major step towards achieving self-sufficiency in supplies of dairy products after the Arab quartet imposed an unjustified blockade. Baladna has set up special cowsheds with temperature control system to protect its inmates from the heat.
