Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is accepting applications for its Summer Research Program 2019, an intensive training programme for exceptional undergraduate students in the field of biomedical research.

Programme interns will gain hands-on laboratory research experience and will learn to conduct scientific research, formulate ideas, design experiments and test hypotheses under the supervision of QBRI researchers. Interns will work on projects that span applied sciences in three main research areas – diabetes, cancer and neurological disorders.

QBRI Executive Director Dr Omar El Agnaf said they believe that the Summer Research Program will foster the students’ scientific and professional development, giving them the opportunities they need to make meaningful contributions to science.

Students can choose to join any of the two batches in the eight-week programme, from 5 May to 27 June, and from 19 May to 11 July. The programme will offer undergraduate students a chance to experience the challenges and prospects of scientific research, and help contribute to QBRI’s work in healthcare.

Now in its fifth year, the programme is designed to develop critical thinking, as well as enhance communication and team-building skills. Participants will receive valuable mentoring and career counseling throughout the programme to support their academic goals and career development.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar Biological Sciences student of Class of 2019, Najlaa Al Thani, said that thanks to QBRI’s Summer Research Program, she gained invaluable research experience and meaningful connections with important research scientists who have supported her career and even extended her experience in QBRI, allowing her to continue her Senior Research Project with them.

QBRI is at the forefront of Qatar’s medical research initiatives. The institute earned regional recognition when it was awarded the prestigious Arab Best Research Institution of the Year 2017 Award. QBRI aims to improve and transform healthcare through innovation in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the Qatari population and the region.
