Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to the 2022 edition of the Summer Research Program (SRP) at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU).

Looking to build on the success of previous editions held between 2015 and 2019, the programme will offer students eight weeks of intensive training in specific fields of biomedical research, from 8 May to 30 June.

Hands-on experience

SRP participants can expect unique opportunities to gain hands-on laboratory research experience under the supervision of distinguished QBRI researchers in a supportive, challenging and knowledge-conducive environment. That includes learning first-hand lessons on biomedical research protocols and techniques related to biomarker development, and other areas such as stem cells, breast cancer, autism, and diabetes. Students can select from a list of available projects under QBRI’s Diabetes Research Center, Translational Cancer and Immunity Center, and Neurological Disorders Research Center.

QBRI Programs and Partnership Senior Manager Lina Hassna said they are proud to announce the launch of the sixth edition of the SRP. In its previous versions, she said that the programme has attracted 70 undergraduate students, some joining HBKU graduate programmes and pursuing their master’s and PhD degrees under the supervision of QBRI researchers.

During the programme, students will gain access to QBRI’s state-of-the-art research facilities that are on par with those of top institutions around the world. In addition, the programme will also enrich the participants’ experience outside the laboratory through a series of seminars, workshops and informal engagement with QBRI’s scientific community and other leading biomedical research institutions.

According to QBRI Executive Director Dr Omar El-Agnaf, the Summer Research Program is an exceptional opportunity for students to experience exciting areas of basic and translational scientific research.

Since launching the programme in 2015, we have seen the lasting impact for young scientists who have been part of the unique training, and the mentorship and lab experience it comes with. Students will leave better prepared to further their interests in health and biomedical research, and eventually, make their own contributions to improving lives.

To be considered for the programme, applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme related to biological or medical science. They must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications will be evaluated by a selection committee from QBRI based on the student’s academic record and performance, letters of recommendation and interview. Please note that the intensive nature of the programme requires a full-time commitment over eight weeks.

The deadline for submission of applications is on 20 March. Interested students should apply online at hbku.edu.qa. They can also send queries to [email protected]
