With less than six months to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) is encouraging the nation to get together and celebrate Olympic sport on National Sport Day 2016. The QOC has today released information about the Olympic sporting activities that will be on offer for all ages and abilities across Qatar.
Speaking ahead of National Sport Day, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, HE Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, said:
It is a very exciting year for sport with the greatest sporting event in the world just six months away. We are encouraging everyone to come together on National Sport Day and #BeOlympic by taking part in our activities across Qatar. Whether you are an aspiring Olympian or simply want to participate for fun, there is something available for everyone. There is no better occasion to be inspired by the Olympic spirit and unite our nation through our shared passion for sport, whilst having fun with family and friends.’
The QOC will be organising activities in the Qanat Quartier of The Pearl in conjunction with the United Development Company. From 8 am–4pm, the beachfront will come alive with sporting activities, competitions and entertainment. To mark Doha’s hosting of the 2016 UCI Road World Championships, there will be an opportunity for visitors to the activity area to win a brand new bike. Cycling fans will also be able to watch the Tour of Qatar travel through The Pearl between 1 pm –3 pm.
The QOC’s National Federations will be organising activities across Qatar, with the main hubs at Katara, the Corniche, Aspire Park and Al Gharrafa. With taster sessions and demonstrations taking place throughout the day in over 30 different sports, National Sport Day provides an opportunity to try new sports and pick up old ones. Sports and activities range from football, athletics and handball to bowling, golf, hockey and para-sport.
Speaking about National Sport Day, Meshaal Al Khalifa, President of the National Sport Day Organising Committee and Assistant Secretary General of Administrative Affairs at the QOC, said:
We hope that this year’s National Sport Day will inspire the nation to take part in sport regularly and lead active and healthy lifestyles. With so many activities on offer for all interests, ages and abilities, it provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to find a sport that they enjoy and a club to join so that they can carry on participating long after National Sport Day is over. It also provides an opportunity for our National Federations to identify young sporting talent who can go on to become Qatar’s future Olympic heroes. We encourage everyone to bring their families and friends and try as much sport as possible on 9 February.’
National Sport Day is an annual event celebrated across Qatar on the second Tuesday of February. Qatar is one of the only countries in the world to have a public holiday dedicated to sport and it aims to bring the nation together in a shared celebration of sport and inspire people to lead active and healthy lifestyles. This year’s National Sport Day will take place on 9 February 2016.
