Qatar Olympic Committee recently hosted a reception for members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), members of the National Olympic Committee of Asia and distinguished guests in Jakarta.

The reception was attended by OCA President Sheikh Ahmed Al Fahad Al Sabah and HE Indonesian Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla.

The reception showcased the best of Qatar sports, putting on display their past, present and future accomplishments and projects. The past showcased Qatar’s sporting history from the 1970s, including their participation in many regional and international events; their first Olympic medal in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympic Games; and their six medals at the Asian Games 1990 in Beijing.

The exhibition also presented the many events and championships that Qatar has hosted since the 1990s, as Qatar has taken great pride in hosting world class events and welcoming many nations and international sporting federations to Doha. The exhibition also had a special focus on Qatar’s future, one that is bright with many possibilities especially for Qatari athletes who emerged from the many innovative programmes and initiatives including the Athlete development pathway project ‘Kun Riyadi’ and the Schools Olympic Programme.

Guests also had the opportunity to taste traditional food, try henna and Arabic calligraphy art. Speaking at the reception, QOC Secretary General Jassim Al Buenain said it was an honour to welcome and host everyone from the Olympic Family.

I hope that everyone had a taste of Qatar’s sport culture. We would also like to thank the Organising Committee for hosting us in Jakarta and we wish all athletes from across Asia the best of luck in their competitions and hope that they give the performance of their lives.’

Team Qatar is represented by over 200 athletes from 20 National Sport Federations. They will compete in 30 events and disciplines at the Asian Games in Jakarta. Team Qatar will also compete in two new sports for the first time: the 3×3 basketball and air sports.
