Qatar University (QU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital (Aspetar) to establish collaboration in the field of medical education and research.

The MoU was signed by QU Vice President for Medical and Health Education and College of Medicine (CMED) Dean Dr Egon Toft and Aspetar Acting Director General Dr Mohamed Ghaith Al Kuwari in the presence of officials from both institutions, as well as QU faculty, staff, and students.

In the terms of the agreement, Aspetar will provide highly qualified international faculty to educate QU medical students in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) at Aspetar clinics. Faculty from QU and Aspetar will also work jointly to establish an undergraduate SEM curriculum for medical students.

Other areas of collaboration include the joint provision of Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development programs to benefit local and regional health care practitioners, as well as joint research projects in relevant areas.

Dr Egon Toft said:

Partnering with Aspetar will definitely enrich our curriculum and serve our students in their journey towards becoming distinguished health professionals. At QU, we recognize the important role that SEM has in promoting health and preventing disease and injury, and we are always committed to serve the needs of the community by building capacity in clinical practice, medical education and research. We are optimistic that the collaboration with Aspetar will be helpful in all these areas.’

Dr Mohamed Ghaith Al Kuwari expressed his pleasure in visiting CMED, said:

I would like to thank QU Health for this collaboration in providing the undergraduate medical education in SEM. This agreement is considered as a step forward to attract students to SEM as a specialty in the near future.’
