One of the best things about living in Qatar is that the dining scene is constantly evolving. Restaurants constantly create bold and innovative dishes, keeping the country’s dining scene alive.
And that’s what we experienced at The Astor Grill in The St Regis Doha.
James Norman, the Executive Chef at The St Regis Doha, challenged himself to execute a fabulous new menu handcrafted by renowned food connoisseur Rachel Morris. Her aim for this incredible menu was to blend her Australian heritage with her love of food. Her blog, Life on the Wedge, showcases all the best food in Qatar so she knows what she’s talking about!
As we were escorted to our seats, we passed the open kitchen which was humming with energy as the chefs worked hard to satiate the hungry crowd. Our menus were already waiting at our table. They promised Deep Water Octopus Carpaccio, Wagyu Beef Tenderloin, AND Verbena Pavlova! And so we waited in mouth-watering anticipation for the first course to arrive…
As someone who has never tried octopus – let alone a deep-water octopus – I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, I was incredibly impressed. The combination of the Carpaccio and octopus meant that neither flavour was too overwhelming. In fact, they seemed to compliment each other to create a delicious, complex flavour. It was expertly paired with raspberry mustard, which added a lovely sweet tang to the dish as well.
With the first course leaving us wanting more, we eagerly awaited our second sumptuous dish. When the Wagyu Beef Tenderloin arrived, we were astonished. Not only did we have a perfectly cooked steak, sitting atop were two huge salt and pepper tiger prawns. The smooth tomato chutney worked perfectly with the distinct flavours of the beef and prawns, tying this incredible dish together with a delicious result.
It was hard to imagine how Chef James and Rachel could improve upon the delicacies we had already tasted. But they certainly did. Last but not least, the Pavlova arrived – two crunchy, sweet pieces of meringue encapsulating a gooey centre of passion fruit jam with honeycomb toffee. Needless to say, we all ate every single bite.
The partnership of Chef James and Rachel is a huge culinary success. Each dish was as unique and flavourful as the one before it!
