The unique Sambo Show will be presented in Qatar for the first time today, 12 February, as part of the Qatar National Sport Day celebration and in continuation of the Qatar-Russia 2018 Year of Culture programme. The event is in partnership with the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) and Russian oil company, Rosneft.
According to Wikipedia, Sambo is a Russian martial art and combat sport that originated in the Russian SFSR in Soviet Union. The word SAMBO is a portmanteau for samozashchita bez oruzhiya, which literally translates as ‘self-defence without weapons’.
The Sambo show programme will consist of interactive masterclasses and workshops performed by seven of the best Russian Sambo experts, showcasing the diversity of the combat sport, based on the synthesis of the very best of the world’s martial arts.
According to HE Fahad bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Russian Federation, they are thrilled to extend the successful Year of Culture Qatar-Russia 2018 programme through additional activities. The initiative is yet another unique opportunity for shared cultural exchange, demonstrating Qatar’s festive outlook on sports, while also displaying Russia’s diverse sport and cultural background.
During the interactive workshops, professional trainers will showcase basic Sambo self-defence techniques, talk about the uniqueness of Beach Sambo and invite the audience to take part in various masterclasses and competitions, with a chance to win prizes. Guests will also have an opportunity to explore a special photo exhibition showcasing the 80-year history of Sambo. Parallel to the show, the event will also hold activities for children such as face painting and a photo shoot with mascots.
