Sotheby’s is pleased to announce that on 21 and 22 October, it will stage an exhibition at Katara Art Center, Building 5  of select highlights from the company’s forthcoming New York Contemporary Art Evening auction. The exhibition will feature 17 masterworks by some of the leading American and European contemporary artists of the post-war era including Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Among the major highlights of the exhibition will be one of the most elegant and fully resolved abstractions by German artist Gerhard Richter ever to appear at auction. Abstraktes Bild from 1990 was painted at a crucial moment in the artist’s career and epitomises his mastery of the art of abstraction (est. in excess of $16 million). At over 100 inches tall, the scale of the Abstraktes Bild is exceptional. It is one of only eight paintings created in 1990 to exceed two and a half metres in height, with the others today housed in prestigious museum collections around the world.
