A bronze cast of the French-Canadian sculptor Louise Bourgeois’ most famous work was unveiled on Sunday 23rd of October in the Qatar National Convention Centre in Education City.
Chosen by HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani to stand in the lobby in Qatar National Convention Centre, it cuts a striking figure and dominates the space. The sculpture which is of a spider, is over 30ft high and 33 ft wide. Bourgeois named her work, “Maman” after her mother.
This is what Louise Bourgeois has said about “Maman”:
The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother
The spider, which you can walk under if you are so inclined, has a protective and watchful presence and in the light open space at the Qatar National Convention Centre the black sculpture is quite a sight. Visit the Qatar Convention Centre for a closer look!
