The Torch which was built for the 15th Asian Games in 2006 is now a luxury 5-star hotel, as Marhaba found out during an exclusive tour.
The Torch is possibly the most famous landmark in Doha, towering above everything in Aspire Zone, motorists use it to navigate around the city and at night, when it is lit up, sparkling and fluorescent it draws the eye and looks rather magical.
It was built for the Asian Games back in 2006, designed to represent a colossal torch and was illuminated for the duration of the Games.
It’s easy to forget, however, that the Torch is not just an architecturally stunning icon and that it has been transformed into a hotel. Located at the heart of Doha’s Sports City, it is going through its soft opening stage, and is quickly becoming the go-to place for athletes, sports fans and business leaders, as if you are playing or watching a sporting event at the stadium you would be hard pressed to find a location more convenient. Especially as it has a walkway through to Villaggio.
There are three restaurants in the Torch, the famous of which is the revolving Three Sixty, which makes a full circle once an hour. Diners slowly rotate, getting a panoramic view of Doha without getting dizzy as a jazz pianist provides light music entertainment. The restaurant serves international cuisine and is already very popular, so book early if you want a reservation. Flying Carpet also offers international cuisine, with a modern twist, despite it’s rather Arabian name and interior. Billowing flying carpets are suspended from the ceiling like clouds, giving it a slightly magical Arabian feel. The third restaurant is called Panorama and it will serve Asian cuisine when it opens, which promises to be quite soon.
Another interesting aspect of the Torch is that it is leading the way with in-room technological innovation; the Torch has interactive LED TVs, a Media Hub Phone System and a Smart pad in-room service menu, an a unique in-room mood light system which enables guests to create an incredibly unique hotel experience. And is also, Marhaba imagines, incredibly fun to play around with.
