… a Volkswagen
The new convertible Beetle Cabriolet available now at Q-Auto showroom on Salwa Road
The new – but still iconic – Volkswagen Beetle cabriolet, or convertible, has plenty of retro charm, and adds to this appeal with the option of top-down motoring for those days of the year when air is clear and the sun is shining – which happily for us in Qatar means most days of the year.
When you think of VW, especially when looking at a ‘Beetle’, you may be reminded of Woodstock, flower power and that funny vase on the dash. And that proves how really good the brand is; VW has been building reliable cars, loved cars, for a long time and still has a great reputation for high quality plus reliable and durable engineering.
But in these modern times, with new buyers perhaps not having those old memories, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle has to stand on its own merits. And, even if you put aside its historic DNA, you get to drive an intriguing compact car that strips away the function of a more conventional hatchback like the VW Golf and offers distinctive styling inside and out. You also have perhaps the only affordable and still practical four-seat convertible on the market.
We like the Cabriolet’s turbocharged engine. The 2.0-litre engine is smooth and powerful, has a lot of punch and sounds great, while the sophisticated DSG gearbox is an excellent compromise for those who want the convenience of an automatic with the performance and control of a manual. The Beetle’s handling is respectably adept; when cruising city streets or on the highway, you’ll be comfortable and the suspension shrugs off any bumps or ruts in the road.
From a functional perspective, it is pleasing that this retro, iconic car has features, controls and construction that are 100% contemporary, such as the large new easy-to-use touchscreen interface. Eye-catchingly, the power-retractable soft top folds down in about 10 seconds and it can be operated at speeds up to 50 kph.
The Beetle Cabriolet offers you style and individuality and – best of both worlds – provides plenty of room for tall drivers, the rear seat also has decent headroom, and you can still get a large suitcase in the boot!

… a Nissan
All-New Nissan Altima 2.5 SV is available now at Saleh Al Hamad Al Manna Showroom on Salwa Road.
The new 2017 Nissan Altima has been revealed by Saleh AlHamad AlMana Co; it has the dynamic yet curvaceous and sleek look of the sporty Maxima. Features included in the base model 2.5 S include ABS, traction-control, vehicle stability control, remote keyless entry with Push Button Ignition, radio with CD player with Aux-in and four speakers, audio controls on steering wheel and dual airbags. The 2.5 SV adds to that cruise control, six-speaker audio system with 5-inch display, bluetooth, USB port with iPod connectivity, rear-view camera, auto-headlamps, parking sensors, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy rims. Moving up to the 2.5 SL, additional features include 6-way power seats, dual zone auto A/C, side and curtain airbags, remote engine start and Bose audio system with nine speakers.
The Altima rides on an independent suspension, with Sachs shocks for better ride control and a more luxurious feel. With its retuned suspension and revised electro-hydraulic steering, the 2016 Altima SV we drove was smooth, quiet and comfortable. It’s a pleasant car for commuting, especially on rough roads. The 2016 Altima is relatively refined and tuned for easy cruising, giving you lots of comfort, competence and convenience.
Having stressed the comfort, the SV’s performance is otherwise impressive. The 2.5-litre engine felt eager at all times and the CVT does an excellent job of wringing power from the engine, especially in sport mode.
The Altima’s priority on comfort reaps benefits in the cabin, where road noise is almost muted.
The cabin feels spacious for four, or maybe five, adults. With 45 inches of legroom and 40 inches of headroom, the front seat has more than adequate space for taller drivers. The rear seat looks cavernous, and even tall passengers should not make contact with the headliner. Rear seatbacks are split 60/40, and fold down for access to the trunk.
The new Altima has more safety gear than ever, but perhaps the coolest feature is the remote engine start which lets you pre-cool your car before you enter. At last, the perfect way to beat Doha weather!

The new Sixth Generation Chevrolet Camaro SS
Almost everything about this sixth generation icon was redesigned in the name of performance. You can see it in the lower, slimmer proportions and dramatic fastback profile. You can feel it in its agile road handling and the refined interior that always puts the driver first. And you can hear it in the growl of the 455 horsepower powerplant that brings to life the most powerful Camaro SS ever.
An all-new architecture helped Camaro lighten the load by over 100 kg compared to the fifth generation. The suspension was engineered to be 21% leaner, with aluminium suspension components that reduce unsprung mass and result in advantages like much better balanced handling.
Remarkably, Camaro has a chassis that’s also 28% stiffer than before, giving the driver an incredible connection to the road. That lighter, stiffer architecture provides the foundation for incredible handling, but Chevrolet wasn’t content to stop there. Electric Power Steering brings road feel and response to a higher plane. Up to four selectable drive modes offer distinct experiences. And the smaller, tighter proportions and quick steering ratios contribute to a nimble, controlled feeling with every turn of the wheel. And four-piston Brembo brakes – the type that is fitted to Formula 1 racing cars – bring it all to a controlled stop from any speed.
The performance of the new Camaro challenges many of the iconic muscle cars from the 1960s, while the Camaro SS’s performance – including 0.97 g cornering – makes it one of the most capable 2+2 coupés on the market today, and it certainly seems to have blown away the other competitors in the Qatari market. However, the performance numbers only tell half of the story, because the lighter kerb weight also makes the new Camaro feel more responsive and agile behind the wheel. It brakes more powerfully, dives into corners quicker, accelerates faster and is more fun to drive than ever.
Chevrolet promised Camaro DNA will never change. Conclusion: It’s all-new. Yet undeniably all Camaro.

… a Porsche
No sports car in history can match the continuity of excellence delivered by the Porsche 911. Its fusion of old and new is unprecedented.
The rear-engined layout has hardly changed since the car was launched in 1963, but, remember, hardly a single part has remained the same and the latest car can rightly claim to be the most charismatic and technically accomplished in its class.
An icon? Certainly – but only because Porsche doesn’t rest and continues its development. The designers focused on making the new 911 appear even more precise, and by doing so they created the blueprint for its future. With a new lighting design and characteristic four-spot LED daytime running lights, now incorporated into the Bi-Xenon main headlights. With direction indicators that are even slimmer than they were before. For a Porsche that is recognisably a 911, even from a distance.
The front has been reshaped for an even sportier look. The air intake design is even more succinct. In the side air intakes, new active air intake flaps control aerodynamics and cooling performance as required.
In summary: the new 911 shows plenty of bite. And the future has whetted its appetite.
The interior of a Porsche is infused with over 60 years of experience in sports car construction. You can feel it: in the materials, which are easy to grip and are exquisitely made. You can see it: in the sporty design. And it communicates itself with every second of driving, thanks to excellent ergonomics and comfort.
Not an everyday sports car then, but a sports car for everyday use. It’s clear the moment you get in, and find an astonishing amount of leg and head room.
The new sports steering wheel speaks the language of motorsport. The design is based on the steering wheel of the 918 Spyder and combines style with purism and a high level of functionality.
Tradition meets innovation. The result? Futurism, but of the Porsche kind.
If you are really passionate about autos and engineering, if you can understand the pleasure in driving a well-crafted car, or if you simply want to bank in the glow of owning one of the best cars in the world, in the history of motoring, you can make a good start by visiting Al Boraq Automobiles, the Porsche Centre Doha on Airport Street.
