Tune in each week as Marhaba delves into the wonderful world of popular culture to find the best new TV series, movies, books, and music.

BINGE WATCH THIS:

Rick and Morty is back! Season 5 had its premiere on 20 June and the remaining nine episodes will air every Monday. Hosted by Cartoon Network’s nighttime Adult Swim programming block, the show’s premise is simple. It follows the misadventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his long-suffering grandson Morty Smith, who divide their time between boring but necessary domestic life and their infinitely more exciting interdimensional exploits. It started off as a short parody of Back to the Future, and has since become an acclaimed series in its own right. This very dark comedy airs on Netflix as well as via Adult Swim.

GET THE POPCORN FOR THIS:

The Fast and Furious team is back! The ninth instalment in the franchise – conveniently named F9 – brings together most of the usual suspects. Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Charlize Theron and Dame Helen Mirren all reprise their roles, while The Rock is notably not present. However, another WWE star now joins the cast, with John Cena playing Jakob, Dominic Toretto’s brother. The plot is just as ludicrous as ever, with Dominic (Diesel) and his crew banding together to stop assassin and high-performance driver Jakob from carrying out his end-of-the-world nefarious plans. Will they stop him? Who is helping him? And why do they need to go into space? Find out, when the movie is released on Friday 25 June – see our Cinema Listings for details of where to watch it.

SETTLE IN WITH A CUP OF TEA AND READ THIS:

Out now is The Layover by Lacie Waldon, a good rom-com summer read. Ava Greene has been a flight attendant for 10 years and is planning one last trip before quitting. However, also on the flight is Jack, a former pilot and a major thorn in Ava’s side. When their plane suffers mechanical problems, they are forced to stopover at Belize. Naturally, what starts off as a disaster turns into Ava re-evaluating both her personal and work life, as she spends more time with Jack. Fun, adventure and of course romance – what more could you want?

CRANK UP THE VOLUME FOR THIS:

If you’re a fan of the smash hit ‘If the World was Ending’ by real-life couple Julia Michaels and JP Saxe, then you might like this treat. After Julia’s release of her debut album, it’s now JP’s turn. The Canadian singer/songwriter’s debut album ‘Dangerous Levels of Introspection’ is out on Friday. The album consists of 13 tracks including the Grammy-nominated duet of Julia and JP (which has now over 141 million views on Youtube). JP worked with a number of exciting people on this album including one of his musical heroes John Mayer.
