Turkish Airlines was awarded the Airline Sustainability Innovation of the Year award by CAPA-Centre for Aviation for their innovative efforts on sustainability.

The global carrier, which puts sustainability at the centre of its business model, won the award for sustainable innovation with the Microalgae-Based Sustainable Bio-Jet Fuel Project (MICRO-JET).  The airline worked closely with scientists to develop the world’s first carbon-negative sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The MICRO-JET project, which was jointly carried out with Boğaziçi University, is aimed at producing biofuels from microalgae using hydro-processed fatty acids and hydrothermal liquefaction methods.

Turkish Airlines Chief Investment and Technology Officer Levent Konukcu said that SAF is a key element to their sustainability strategy to reduce aviation’s environmental impact. In addition to the regular use of SAF in their flights, their R&D support to the MICRO-JET Project for the production of biofuel, and as one of the signatories of the SAF Declaration, prove how much they focus on the fight against climate change.

Turkish Airlines plans to use biofuel in its flights after engine tests by Turkish Technic. The flag carrier will be one of the few global companies that will use this type of fuel, which is considered the cleanest in the world.
