As part of the Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), in association with the Qatar Museums (QM), presents, ‘Art in Qatar: An Artist’s Perspective,’ a conversation between renowned Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad and artist/academic Dr Yasser Mongy.
Open to the public, this event will take place on Wednesday 12 November 2014 at 6 pm at the atrium at VCUQatar. The conversation will be in Arabic with English translation available.
‘Art in Qatar: An Artist’s Perspective,’ featuring Ahmad in conversation with Dr Mongy, is the first in the series of five lectures. The conversation coincides with the exhibition, ‘Yousef Ahmad: Story of Ingenuity’, which is being held at the QM Gallery at Katara Cultiral Village from 11 November to 14 February 2014 and will focus on Ahmad’s experience of creating and exhibiting artwork in Qatar.
Ahmad was born in Doha in 1955 and has received a BA in Arts and Education and an MFA in Fine Arts. He is an art consultant for Mathaf as well as for numerous other galleries across the Arab world. He has been exhibiting internationally since the 1970s and is one of the most celebrated of Qatar’s contemporary artists, having received numerous awards, including most recently the Honorary Order of Merit at the level of GCC in acknowledgement for his outstanding career in art. His work has been represented at biennial exhibitions and art fairs around the world, and is widely collected by museums, government organisations, companies and private collectors alike. Ahmad’s sustained and direct involvement in Qatar’s artistic dialogue throughout his career, as well as his continuing contribution to the development of the art sector, will provide unique insight into the current dynamic developments within Qatar’s artistic and cultural landscape.
Dr Mongy is an artist, author and academic researcher. He teaches in the Graphic Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo and has been a consultant for Mathaf, where he has also worked on documenting the museum’s permanent art collection. Mongy is a well-published author, and participated in publishing the first Arabic dictionary of art terms. He is also a celebrated artist and has been featured in numerous lectures and exhibitions around the world.
