An alumna of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) – Dr Rana Elmaghraby – was elected Resident-Fellow Trustee of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) following a national vote. Dr Elmaghraby, who graduated from WCM-Q in 2016, finished on top of a national poll among members of APA.
In this leadership role, Dr Elmaghraby will serve for one year without a vote on the Board of Trustees, the governing body of APA. Following a year’s service, she will advance to the position of Resident-Fellow Member Trustee and will serve on the Board for one year with voting privileges.
Dr Elmaghraby, who is currently a second-year psychiatry resident at the University of Minnesota, said she felt honoured and excited to be elected.
I have been involved with APA since I was a medical student and I have always been interested in legislation and policy change because this is where big things happen. My goal is to serve as the voice of resident and fellow psychiatrists, particularly in the realm of trainee well-being, and to serve as an advocate for people living with mental illness.’
The APA, which is headquartered in Washington, DC, is considered the main professional organisation for psychiatrists and trainee psychiatrists and is reputed to be the largest psychiatric professional organisation in the world, with some 37,800 members. The APA is also considered the world’s leading international psychiatric organisation, with members practicing in more than 100 countries.
