WCM-Q Alumnus Gets Scholarship Title for Research on Health of ‘IVF’ Children
WCM-Q alumnus Dr Nigel Pereira has been awarded a prestigious scholarship title in recognition of his research into the health of children conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Dr Pereira, who graduated from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) in 2010, was named the ‘Tessler Grandchildren Clinical Scholar II’ by the Board of Overseers at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, where he now practices as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Assistant Professor of Reproductive Medicine.
The scholarship appointment recognises Dr Pereira’s excellence in research into both the immediate perinatal and long-term health of children conceived by IVF.
Dr Pereira said that he has always been interested in studying the safety of IVF and the long-term health of IVF babies. The scholarship, he said, provided him with an impetus to pursue the ongoing research interests and he is truly humbled and grateful to receive the honour.
In another recent success, Dr Pereira was named a ‘Star Reviewer’ for excellence in his work as a peer reviewer for Fertility and Sterility, the official publication of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and one of the most prestigious journals in the field.
According to Dr Pereira, the peer review process helped him refine his own research questions and occasionally present him with new ideas to explore. He added that peer review is an integral part of scientific publishing but often goes unnoticed.
A good reviewer improves the quality and impact of a manuscript by providing critical feedback about study methodology or data analysis. For these reasons, I’m very honoured to be named a Star Reviewer by Fertility and Sterility.
Dr Pereira has also been included in the 2021 ‘Super Doctors’ list of elite-level physicians practising in the United States and was named by the Super Doctors organisation as one of New York’s Rising Stars for 2021. He was also accorded the honours in 2019 and 2020.
WCM-Q Dean Dr Javaid Sheikh said that Dr Pereira’s outstanding contributions to research are a testament to his unwavering commitment to his work and to his patients. He added that Dr Pereira’s achievements bring great pride to WCM-Q, and they are pleased to see his excellent work receive the recognition it deserves.
