‘It’s for bachelors’
‘Too far, Industrial Area isn’t it?’
‘Difficult to find a parking’
‘Not going there in this traffic!’
‘It is only for Indian movies’
‘Seating got to be crammed and uncomfortable!’
‘QR 15? No way!’
These (and more) comments prompted us to pay a visit to the newly opened cinema at West End Park. And with the visit we are convinced why it is not always right to believe in rumours.
For starters, West End Park is not in the Industrial Area. It is located at the end of Barwa Commercial Avenue, close to Al Watan Roundabout and just before the Industrial Area.
We were greeted by Waleed Saadat, Logistic In-Charge at Century 21 Qatar, who took us on a tour of the cinema.
Excited about the response received within the first two weeks Waleed says:
The first weekend, when the Malayalam movie Drishyam was released, we ran full-house for all the shows. Even after one week of the release most of the shows are full-house. Also note that 40% of the crowd are families.
Only one, out of four, cinema is open at the moment and Waleed tells us that the remaining 3 will be fully functional by the first quarter of 2014. All cinemas (branded as Cinemax) have a seating capacity of 500, out of which 100 seats are dedicated for families (this is a separate area at the rear-end of the cinema). Parking – well, you don’t have to worry about it. There is ample parking for all cinemas.
The cinemas are not dedicated to one region or one category. Movies in all languages and from all regions will be released here. We started with Indian movies as part of the National Day events organised in West End Park.’
There will be four shows daily (2 pm, 5 pm, 8:15 pm, and 11:30 pm) and reservations can be made two days in advance.
Phone reservation is not possible at the moment, you may call 4427 3468 for show timings and other details.’
One interesting factor is that the four cinemas are in different buildings in the park, which translates to lesser crowd and distributed parking. Each cinema has a spacious main hall, facilities for snack-bars and huge rest-rooms.
For QR 15, it is a steal!
How to get there
From Medical Commission roundabout, head towards Industrial Area. Once you reach the end of Barwa Commercial Avenue (you will see Dragon Mart hoardings towards the end) take a left from the roundabout. This will take you to another roundabout, take left and drive 200 meters, and take the first right. Take the second exit from the roundabout you reach, drive 200 meters and you will see the cinema on your right (Grand Mall on your left).
West End Park
West End Park is a visionary project through the collaboration of Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammad Bin Thani Social Welfare Foundation (JBM)and Qatar Property Management and it covers an approximate area of 671,000 mt sq of land. Grand Mall Hypermarket was opened in the property last October and we are told that Qatar’s first outlet mall will be open by the first quarter of 2014.
