The World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) is to present its evidence-based research at an exclusive global health policy briefing hosted by Health Affairs in Washington, DC on 14 June.

Health Affairs is one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed journals in the field of health policy research. Its mission is to serve as a high-level, non-partisan platform to encourage analysis and discussion to improve health and healthcare, and to address issues including cost, quality and access.

The forum, entitled ‘Global Health: Patient Safety, Cancer Care, Universal Health Coverage and Innovation’, will explore major issues confronting the global health community, such as the effective implementation of universal health coverage and improving patient safety drawn from WISH’s portfolio of policy research in recent years.

A number of WISH leadership and WISH research forum chairs will play prominent roles in the briefing, moderating discussions and speaking about their respective areas of healthcare expertise. They include Sir David Nicholson, Former Chief Executive, National Health Service, United Kingdom, and Director, David Nicholson Healthcare Solutions Limited, and Chair of WISH Universal Health Coverage Forum 2014; Victor Dzau, President, National Academy of Medicine, and Chair of WISH Precision Medicine Forum 2016; Peter Pronovost, Senior Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality, Director of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Chair of WISH Patient Safety Forum 2015; and Mark McClellan, Director of the Robert J Margolis Center for Health Policy and the Margolis Professor of Business, Medicine and Health Policy, Duke University, and Chair of WISH Accountable Care Forum 2013 and 2016.

Additionally, the event will bring together more than 150 leading international figures from academia, non-governmental organisations and the media.

Alan Weil, Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief, who will host the event at the National Press Club, said:

We are pleased to partner with Qatar Foundation and its World Innovation Summit for Health on this important forum to explore major issues confronting the global health community. Many of the speakers have been previously published in Health Affairs; a companion compendium containing those articles will be available at the forum. Health Affairs appreciates the authors’ participation at the Washington forum, and is grateful to Qatar Foundation and WISH, as well as Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medical and Research Center, and Imperial College London for their support for much of our global content.’

Professor Lord Darzi of Denham, Executive Chair of WISH, said:

Our partnership with Health Affairs is evidence of the global impact of WISH research. We look forward to this joint forum, which promises valuable discussion and debate on some of the most pressing issues in healthcare today.’

Egbert Schillings, CEO of WISH, said:

The ultimate purpose of WISH is to influence decision makers using the best possible evidence available. Seeing our original research continued and expanded in these ten articles means that WISH has started a conversation that continues to resonate with the health policy community. Healthcare as a sector is also uniquely intertwined with academia and our continued presence on the pages of a peer-reviewed journal simply strengthens our argument. To then bring our content to key opinion leaders in Washington DC is of course especially gratifying.’

Health Affairs and WISH, an initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), have built a strong partnership in delivering pertinent policy content to a vast international audience of healthcare leaders. In September 2014, Health Affairs featured ten articles written by WISH authors and contributors. Health Affairs’ audience is broad and includes government and health industry leaders; health care advocates; scholars of health, health care and health policy; and others concerned with health and healthcare issues in the United States and worldwide.
