To celebrate the annual World Chocolate Day this 7 July, we bring you another unusual set of information about chocolates.

Did you know that chocolates are not only good for desserts, they can also be utilised for other non-food use such as body paint, fighting tooth decay (seriously), skincare, spa treatment and yes, even perfume.

Chocolate bodypaint

This do-it-yourself bodypaint is easy to make, using ingredients that are easy to find. Instead of commercial body paints, why not try to make your own chocolate bodypaint?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • ⅓ cup of sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • four to six tablespoons of water
  • two teaspoons butter
  • ¼ cup of cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon of flavouring (almond, lemon, peppermint, etc)

Directions: In a saucepan combine sugar, salt, and water over medium heat. Next, bring it to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer until sugar is dissolved. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the butter, stirring until melted and fully combined. Add the cocoa and flavourings (optional). When fully combined and smooth, pour into a mason jar or other heat-safe container. Store and when ready to use, heat for 15 seconds at a time, stirring in between.

Fight tooth decay with chocolates!

Teeth stock imageIn an article published in the British Dental Journal in 2007, then-doctoral candidate Arman Sadeghpour from Tulane University, New Orleans, said that cocoa extract is more effective than fluoride in fighting cavities. The extract, a white crystalline powder whose chemical makeup is similar to caffeine, helps harden tooth enamel, making users less susceptible to tooth decay. His research claims that cocoa extract could offer the first major innovation to commercial toothpaste since manufacturers began adding fluoride to toothpaste.

You’ll find a lot of chocolate-based skincare and beauty products available under many beauty brands. There are also many perfumes that use the dark chocolate notes, like this BLV notte from Bvlgari. Lip balms, body scrubs, creams, these products are said to be effective against premature ageing, with anti-oxidants that improve skin tones, texture and radiance.
