As we continue to follow the news of how COVID-19 remains a threat to Qatar and the rest of the world, there are a few faces we’re beginning to be familiar with.

From Dr Tedros Adhanom, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) to HE Lolwah Rashid Al Khater, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar. She is also the Spokesperson for the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management in Qatar. According to HE Lolwah Al Khater, Qatar has been absolutely transparent in conveying facts related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

On a daily basis, as we tune into Qatar TV for the latest information of COVID-19 in Qatar, we are met with HE Lolwah Al Khater, leading press conferences as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Qatar.

Since her appointment in 2017, HE Al Khater has been one of Qatar’s leading figures, pushing forward Qatar’s foreign policy, sharing information and perspectives, and advancing the Qatari narratives on many issues facing the world today.

HE Al Khater has been celebrated as the first female Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the State of Qatar, as well as one of the Qatari women who took the lead in defending the country by responding to accusations made by neighbouring countries during the Qatar blockade.

Lolwah Al Khater Marhaba Qatar Covid 19 Qatar DohaHE Al Khater was appointed Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2017 and Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in December 2019. Before her appointment, she joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Minister Plenipotentiary.

She has also served as the director of planning and quality at the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) and the executive director of Doha Forum. She is a board member at Media City and The Institute for Palestine Studies.

HE Al Khater holds a Master of Science in Computing and a Master of Arts in Public Policy. She is also a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Oxford, has worked as a research project manager at Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), as a part-time lecturer at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, and a research associate at The Oxford Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Forum at St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford.

HE Al Khater has additionally been working as an independent policy analyst, participating in conferences and multiple publications. She is the co-editor of the book, Policy-making in a Transformative State: the Case of Qatar, published by Palgrave Macmillan, as well as writing the book Educational Outputs and Labor Market Needs: A Study on Labor Market Issues and Methods of Addressing Them, which was published through the General Secretariat of the GCC.
