Unveiling Ancient Maritime Ties: Lecture on Historic Shipwrecks at the Museum of Islamic Art

19 February @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Organised as part of Year of Culture legacy programming, the event will take place in the MIA Auditorium on Monday, 19 February, at 6:30 pm. It is free and open to the public who pre-register through the MIA website.

Guest lecturer, Dr. Stephen Murphy from SOAS University of London, leads this talk, organised by the Department of Archaeology and Year of Culture Legacy, delving into the rich history of our interconnected past.

In this lecture, titled From Srivijaya to the Abbasid Caliphate: The Belitung and Cirebon shipwrecks and maritime connectivity in the 9th and 10th centuries CE, attendees will be able to explore the maritime connections from just over a thousand years ago between the Gulf region and the area today comprising the modern nation-state of Indonesia.

Guest speaker Stephen Murphy will talk about the intriguing history behind two shipwrecks, the Belitung and the Cirebon. These wrecks help unravel the complexity of globalisation and interconnectivity in the ninth and tenth-century Indian Ocean world.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, visit Lecture: From Srivijaya to the Abbasid Caliphate. Questions can be addressed to: [email protected]. For more information about the Museum of Islamic Arts, please visit their website here: Museum of Islamic Arts.
