Multi-awarded guitarist and IAID’s very own Dr Gonzalo Arias Contreras will present a guitar concerto entitled Transcriptions this Thursday, 3 November, at the IAID Recital Studio.

Dr Contreras is a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Georgia (US), a Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin (US), and a Bachelor of Arts graduate from the University of Chile.

Born in Chile, Dr Contreras has bagged numerous prestigious guitar competitions around the world, including the JS Bach International Guitar Competition (Japan), the Louisville International Guitar Competition (US), the Troy University Guitar Competition (US), and the Montreal International Guitar Competition (Canada).

Dr Contreras also won guitar competitions in Spain, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile. This is the maestro’s first time in the Middle East, and he considers himself truly fortunate to be in Qatar.

He is currently an IAID instructor of acoustic and classical guitar and ukulele to students of different levels.

I feel very lucky because, during my time at IAID, I can interact with different students and their families. I am grateful to be able to travel throughout the world where the only language needed is music, motivation, and dedication.

Dr Contreras will present different pieces of music from the Baroque period to the 20th century, with selections from the famous rock group Queen. The maestro said the Queen was always inspired in some way by classical music and opera, which are blended with rock imprints.

The first part of his performance features a classical selection of Latino Spanish flavours, where the dissonances of Piazolla and the Phrygian mode of Malats appear and give a complete recital form.

This concert is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Call 4441 1234 or 4432 0974 or visit iaid.qa for more details and to reserve your seat.
