Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation ‘Kahramaa’ announced the launch of ‘Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy’ (QNRES), having coordinated with 22 key energy actors in Qatar, a step that reflects the efforts of Kahramaa to enhance its work in the field of renewable energy uses and to develop policies and strategies, believing in a more sustainable future for Qatar to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third Qatar National Development Strategy 2024-2030.

Qatar’s Solar Potential

Qatar boasts one of the highest global horizontal radiation levels worldwide by generating over 2,000 kWh per square metre per year, making it a prime location for solar energy. QNRES aims to increase large-scale renewable power generation to about 4 GW by 2030 and recommends the installation of distributed solar generation up to around 200 MW by 2030 to enhance energy resilience and reduce strain on the centralised grid infrastructure. The aim is to reduce Qatar’s total annual CO2 emissions from the power sector by 10% and decrease the carbon intensity in Qatar’s annual CO2 intensity by 27% for each unit of electricity produced.

Economic Advantages and Energy Security

Diversifying generation sources not only enhances energy security but also promotes stability in the energy sector. Additionally, by 2030, it is expected that there will be a 15% reduction in the average cost of electricity generation. Kahramaa plays a leading role in regulating and defining RE regulations, executing deployment programmes, managing stakeholder interaction, issuing licenses, and supporting research and innovation initiatives. Kahramaa recently announced the start of receiving applications for accredited solar panels and inverters from distributors and manufacturers, preparing for the launch of the distributed renewable energy programme.

Net-Billing for Distributed Renewable Energy Generation

QNRES will implement net-billing for distributed renewable energy generation, enabling prosumers to sell surplus power generated to the grid at a fixed price, thus encouraging investments in solar PV. With the participation of all stakeholders in Qatar’s energy sector, there is an aspiration to achieve the best results for which the strategy has been developed, including encouraging initiatives, scientific research, and cooperation for a sustainable future.
