The new Green Line of the Education City Tram – connecting the North and South campuses of Education City – is now operational. The new line, which opened this Saturday, 29 July, also connects the Education City Community Housing to both campuses.

Stops on the North Campus include Education City Community Housing, Qatar Foundation research centres, the Premier Inn Doha Education City Hotel, Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), and Sidra Medicine, with the South Campus housing universities and schools at Education City.

According to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Technical Office Director Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalid Al-Thani, the Education City Tram supports their efforts and plans to deliver an integrated, sustainable public transit network in Qatar, which covers all urban areas.

He said that expanding the Education City Tram’s scope of service also contributes to backing the MOT’s strategy for a full switch to a transportation system powered by clean, eco-friendly electric energy, to serve the country’s sustainable development requirements and implement Qatar’s National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, thereby taking the country one more step closer to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Nasser Al Hajri, Executive Director of Capital Projects at Qatar Foundation, said that the launch of the Green Line further signifies their commitment to a sustainable campus.

As a beacon of innovation, we prioritise the well-being of our Education City community, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering a greener future.

Al Hajri said that this investment in eco-friendly mobility not only enhances the quality of life for students and staff but also affirms their dedication to building a thriving, environmentally responsible community for generations to come.

Marwan Dhuhair, a PhD student at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), and who lives in the student housing at Education City, said he prefers using the tram. He said he uses the tram every day to go around Education City and to connect to the Metro. There is a stop right outside his housing, and the trams are very regular, he said.

The tram, which already reached a milestone by serving one million passengers, first launched its Blue Line on 25 December 2019. It serves the route which begins at Mathaf and follows the Academic Loop. The Yellow Line launched on 12 October 2020 and runs from Al Shaqab to the Education City Stadium, passing through Oxygen Park, Minaretein (Education City Mosque), and the Ceremonial Court.
