Qatar very recently approved a draft law that will regulate healthcare services in the country, with all expatriates and visitors soon to be required to obtain health insurance to receive basic healthcare services in Qatar.

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani chaired the regular cabinet meeting this week at the Amiri Diwan. The cabinet approved the draft law and referred it to the Shura Council.

The draft law aims to provide an integrated, efficient and sustainable health system:

  • Establishment of necessary policies, plans, procedures, systems and standards to provide healthcare services in governmental and private health facilities
  • Determine the rights and duties of patients that must be taken into account when receiving healthcare services
  • Providing healthcare services to citizens in government health facilities without charge
  • All residents and visitors to the country must obtain health insurance to receive basic health care services

Qatar currently offers affordable healthcare services to residents and nationals through Hamad Medical Corporation.
