Two hotels in Qatar – The St. Regis Doha and Marriott Marquis City Center Doha – recently received a Green Key Award, the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. 

The award was announced by Green Key National Operator, Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC). The St. Regis Doha is the 6th Green Key awarded hotel in Qatar, while this is the second year that Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel has been awarded the Green Key.

This is a well-deserved award for The St. Regis Doha given their responsible act towards environment and sustainability and for bringing environmental awareness issues to guests and staff.

Marriott Marquis has shown commitment to sustainable operation and continuous improvement across different hotel departments, and has made waste reduction a priority:

  1. Green Key AwardGreen Key AwardRethinking their disposable items and implementing a 100% Plastic Free Hotel by replacing all disposables with glass or compostable items.
  2. Recognising the significance of food waste and sustainability and partnering with Winnow, following the simple belief that Food is too valuable to waste.

After implementing these more sustainable practices, Marriott Marquis was able to track and analyse food waste trend and make innovative changes to their operations – reducing production of highly wasted food items. With the help of Winnow, they have been able to run a more environment-friendly operation by cutting down 68% of food waste in Crossroads, 78% in Banqueting, as well as saving up to QAR195,665, equivalent to 63,756 meals.
