To stave off possible boredom while at home, every week Marhaba delves in to the wonderful world of popular culture to find the best new TV series, movies, books and music.

BINGE WATCH THIS:

Jason Sudeikis first appeared on screen as Ted Lasso in adverts for NBC Sports’ coverage of the English Premier League in 2013, as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur FC. Sudeikis now stars in a 10-episode TV series debuting on Apple TV+ this week. Lasso heads to the UK as coach of struggling football team AFC Richmond – a job he is completely unsuited to. Despite being out of his depth, and dealing with a scheming club owner who wants the club to fail, Lasso is a good-hearted nice guy with pithy observations about life and a fantastic moustache. You don’t need to be a football fan to enjoy this feel-good summer hit comedy.

GET THE POPCORN FOR THIS:

Available this week in virtual cinemas and a few days later on demand and on digital, Hard Kill is a good ole summer action movie, originally titled Open Source. Perennial hardman Bruce Willis is billionaire tech owner Donovan Chalmers who hires a team of mercenaries to protect his work from falling into the wrong hands; those wrong hands kidnap his daughter in order to get it. Chalmers and team leader Derek Miller (Jesse Metcalfe) play a game of cat and mouse with terrorist group The Pardoners to save her and protect the fate of the human race. vert-ent.com

SETTLE IN WITH A CUP OF TEA AND READ THIS:

What to Watch, Read, Listen to

Killer, Come Back to Me: The Crime Stories of Ray Bradbury is a deluxe illustrated celebration of the noted author’s crime stories, issued in honour of his 100th birthday, and the first such publication. Best known as the writer of Fahrenheit 451 and the recipient of numerous awards, as well as an Emmy, this collection’s 20 stories showcase Bradbury’s vast range and power. Time travel, ventriloquist’s dummies, the murder of sentient robots, bodies in the attic – all this and more can be found in this tribute volume. A must for Bradbury fans, but also for those who enjoy crime fiction with some science fiction and fantasy thrown in for good measure.

CRANK UP THE VOLUME FOR THIS:

Still talking about killers, has it really been 16 years since Mr Brightside was released? The debut single from The Killers was, and still is, the quintessential Noughties anthem about jealousy, from the massive hit album Hot Fuss. Upcoming sixth studio album Imploding the Mirage is scheduled for release on 21 August, the follow-up to 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful featuring another Killers earworm The Man. While the band may have had to join the club with the postponement of their world tour, fans can instead enjoy singer Brandon Flowers’ trademark energetic vocals on this 10-track album, with no doubt another earworm in the playlist. Imploding the Mirage somehow manages to sound both retro and modern at the same time – the synth-rock is still there with fresh, new interpretations, and features guest appearances by Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) and kd lang.
